Built by helicopter in 1989, Purcell Lodge has earned a reputation as the finest wilderness lodge in North America. Hot showers, flush toilets, and electricity generated from a mountain stream support exemplary guest services including a dining room that has received rave reviews from "Gourmet Magazine". From the mountain top location on the boundary of Glacier National Park in British Columbia, a 3 hour drive west of Banff National Park, the modern facility provides doorstep recreational access to the many alpine peaks, ridges, bowls and alpine meadows that characterize the spectacular wilderness of the surrounding Purcell Mountains. If you want to experience all that the Canadian Rockies has to offer, and you are tired of bumping elbows with throngs of other travellers, Purcell Lodge is the place for your Canadian Rockies vacation
Far from the world of telephones, televisions and highways, Purcell Lodge compliments its spectacular mountain environment. But on the inside, it offers the welcoming comforts of a fine home. The main floor of Purcell Lodge has a spacious and open floor plan and is dominated by massive wooden timbers and expansive windows framing spectacular views in every direction. A central glassed in fireplace divides the living room from our dining area. An additional feature is a bright and airy library/reading room with large sliding glass doors onto the balcony. This is a superb place to while away a couple of hours with a good book.
G uestrooms are private, and ring the perimeter of the building on the top floor of Purcell Lodge. There are only ten guestrooms, accommodating just 20-30 guests at one time, allowing you to have a standard of service that is 'Beyond Expectation'. Private toilet and shower rooms are just a step across the hall from the guestrooms, are cleaned daily, and offer a civilized approach to a backcountry experience.
There are three styles of guestrooms at Purcell Lodge. Each is compact but beautifully appointed in a manner reminiscent of a fine old steamship. All have spectacular mountain views, and most have access to a balcony. Standard features in all our guestrooms include a closet and storage drawers, ensuite vanity, reading lights, and fluffy non-allergenic duvets and pillows. Daily housekeeping service is provided.
Corner Rooms: The four Corner Rooms have more elbow- room, because they have just one single queen-sized bed. Guests also enjoy a little more window area for viewing the spectacular sights that grace the lodge. Guests staying in a Corner Room enjoy balcony access and all Lodge amenities.
Superior Rooms: The four Superior Rooms feature a queen-sized bed plus an overhead twin-sized birth. These rooms provide a slightly more economical option, offering the ability to accommodate a total of three people, or two people wishing separate beds. All guests in superior rooms enjoy balcony access.
Shared Rooms: Two family-style rooms round out the complement of guestrooms at Purcell Lodge. These are the largest and most affordable rooms. There is a queen-sized bed for use by individuals or couples, and a total of three twin-sized berths for use by any travelling companions with whom they intend to share a room. Due to the extended size of these rooms, they do not have balconies.
The Sauna: Purcell Lodge has a traditional wood fired cedar sauna that is just what the doctor ordered after a day of exercise in the outdoors. A few minutes in a steamy sauna to soothe away sore joints or stiff muscles, is a sure fired recipe to a good nights sleep. During the winter, guests have been known to take a dive in the snow to maximize the benefits of our "backcountry spa".
At Purcell Lodge, two types of programs are offered:
Full Service: These fully catered vacation packages include casual gourmet meals and snacks, accommodation, superb customer service, as well as complimentary guiding and instructional programs.
Self-Service: Guests are able to book an individual room at any time during the regularly scheduled winter and summer programs. Groups are welcome to reserve a block of space for a club outing, corporate meeting, wedding, or other special occasion, at any time of the year. You may opt to explore on your own if you are comfortable in a wilderness environment.
Activities: From the mountaintop location on the boundary of Glacier National Park, the modern facility provides doorstep recreational opportunities on the many accessible alpine peaks, ridges, bowls and meadows, which characterize the spectacular wilderness of the Purcell Mountain Range. These opportunities are limited only by guest demand and safety considerations.
